The thing I don’t get about this whole movement, besides the obvious personal intrusion, is that it would be a disincentive to buy a car that gets good mileage, if everyone is going to pay the same taxes regardless of the efficiency of their cars.

It’s a disincentive to buy a car altogether…. and push more people to mass transit. Those people who have no choice, like those where there isn’t the population density to make mass transit feasible, or those who can’t afford to take 3 hours to commute to work because mass transit doesn’t have a schedule that fits their work hours, are screwed.
