I saw a bumper sticker. It read: ‘I’m a Christian. I’m not perfect, just forgiven.’ I think it speaks to the thought of a get out of jail free card.
I can’t figure out if people simply don’t understand what’s involved in forgiveness (from a religious perspective) or if they willfully ignore it.
IIRC from my earlier years as a Christian, the conditions for forgiveness is the same in Christianity as it is in Islam: There must be deep remorse followed by sincere repentance and a vow to strive mightily never to repeat the mistake. It’s not just, “Oh goody, I’m forgiven in advance, so I can just repeatedly do WTF I want and not have to concern myself with consequences.”
