Note: It was Republican President William McKinley who ordered the 10th Cavalry to restore order. The 10th was a Buffalo Soldier (all black) unit that had just returned from Cuba and the Spanish American War. They had suffered high losses in the yellow fever epidemic there and were probably in no mood to put up with denialists and plague rats.

Wasn’t the black Tenth Cavalry the unit who had its members cashiered en masse by Teddy Roosevelt a couple of years later after some other racial “incident” in (?) Brownsville? Texas, man…..

IIRC, they weren’t pardoned until this century.
