Technically, a “gun” is a projector of some mass.

The evolution of human culture has gone crudely thusly:

1. throwing stones
2. throwing spears
3. throwing spears with stones tied to the front
4. throwing spears with stones tied to the front through the use of stored energy (e.g., the string of a bow.)
5. throwing of stones via the conversion of chemical energy potential into kinetic energy (gunpowder.)
6. throwing of stones via EMF (e.g. rail guns.)

Anyway, by increasing the cross section of the “stone” - in this case the hollow point bullet - one will destroy a large cross section of the surface and near-surface of the target.

If you want to “pierce” the target one makes the “stone” out of a hard (not easily deformable) material for the front or shell, and possibly cover it with a lubricant (teflon, low melting point metal, etc.)

Anyway, all of these things are created with one purpose in mind - to kill others. To pretend otherwise is just that - pretending.

Another way to look at, at least militarily is how many men do you need to control a selected area of land.

In ancient times, you would need an army of thousands to cover a front with sufficient force to guarantee control.

As military resources have advanced, the number has continued to decrease as the ability to project force has increased.
