The original intent of uber and the other gig economy apps may have been for what we traditionally thought of as independent contractors. But it has evolved in a way that doesn’t compute. You can’t just do a delivery or two or a ride here and there anymore.

That said, in a general sense, I’m not very keen on the new California law. Particularly the “central to business” test. Lots of attorneys, for example, rely on contract lawyers to make appearances or ghostwrite motions/briefs. If those contract attorneys are suddenly employees, it’s going to cause a lot of havoc. It’s also going to completely fuck up the truck driving industry and the idea of owner/operators.
