I guess the logic I have is this is the American Equivalent of de-Nazification.

I understand, but in this case the people who held slaves and rebelled against the Union are all dead. De-Nazification was against actual Nazis, not against their descendants.

Moreover, de-Nazification did not extend to cemeteries and tombs. Indeed the SS cemetery was not removed, even though the SS committed horrendous deeds.
