Death cases may get the most press, but the real dirty “secret” is that our entire justice system is a mess and is nowhere near as reliable or accurate as people like to think it is.

A lot of that press surrounding death cases in recent years has had to do with guys getting new trials or even released years after conviction because new evidence came to light. One of the big ones recently was the West Memphis Three, who were released after years of back-and-forth in the courts over new evidence as well as revelations of misconduct on the part of the police and the justice system.

Thing is, every time we see such news, it helps reinforce in our minds the myth that justice is eventually served, that such mistakes eventually get worked out. This case should be what shreds that myth, but it seems the media doesn’t have time to report on cases it can’t sensationalize.
