I think what happens is the social contacts that are created when people use pot. This is either done within the pot smoking circles and extends into acquaintances with dealers who have even more extreme drug use and criminal backgrounds. All of this makes it easier to be exposed to the harder drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth, etc., because it is part of the drug culture.

Yeah. My ex hooked up with dealers at a very young age, and he didn’t quit until he hit bottom. He’s clean and sober now, thanks to NA. They get a different set of contacts and keep coming back - they don’t wind up in the usual places (jails, institutions, the morgue).
