It’s not even a new business model. Intra-company competition was popular some years ago and damaged a lot of companies. (Who was it that thought it was a great idea to have the different departments in Sears stores compete with each other?)
My husband worked for a company that did that sort of thing back in the early 90’s. It was a small company and they managed to go out of business within a few years.
The Nineties were a time of particularly dumb business fads. I worked for an outfit that became convinced that every department could be made into a profit center. I just started job hunting.
