There’s a background check involved as part of the application process, and they can still pull you aside for an additional search if they think there’s a reason to do so.

And it carries a stiff penalty if you break the rules - your card is instantly revoked.

It’s really designed for commuters, and the assumption is they won’t endanger the convenience of the easy daily crossing by trying anything illegal.

Plus it comes with TSA Precheck and Global Entry, each of which costs almost as much as Nexus by itself. And the $100 is for ten years.

That makes it a little clearer.

I don’t go to Canada (or anywhere else) enough to get such a card. I would think my passport would do the same thing (particularly with the embedded electronic chip in it) and it has the same penalty (you can have it revoked on the spot if you violate the rules).
