I spent 20 years at MINSY building Nuclear Subs..But every so often…
My Boss walked in one day sometime in the early 90’s and told a group of us were flying to to Lincoln in the Indian Ocean cause they had totally wrecked DU#2 during WestPac tour..They melted all the tubes in the fresh water unit 2 and needed help.
They dumped high pressure steam into the unit but there was no water in the copper tubes..Everything melted inside…I’m surprised the MPA didn’t die from a heart attack

During my one and only CV cruise the starboard engineering crew totally destroyed the engine bearings by “gundecking” the oil level readings. When we got back to San Diego the repairs consisted of torch cutting through multiple decks holes 50+ feet across, and using a cargo winch to remove and replace the bearing housing. The Navy was liable for the costs involved because the bearings were leased from G.E., they are too expensive to buy outright.
