I think a lot of folks see our involvement in foreign wars as being the Great, Noble Country going in and fixing things for “the natives”, who should then be humbly grateful and model their society after ours-and give preference to our business interests. When this doesn’t happen, they get pissed.

Oddly enough, it’s the same policy that virtually every empire in history has operated under, the idea that “the natives” are a bunch of ignorant savages, as if they weren’t then they wouldn’t be occupied. Thus we’re there to bring them civilization/order/democracy/etc and any attempts to resist will not be tolerated. The only thing that’s evolved is the manner in which resistance is dealt with.
