Not completely true. Or rather it was not SYG that led to the failure.

The (to me) critical incident of miscarriage of justice occurred approximately 3 am Monday morning. That’s when the assistant DA arrived (normally not in till 9 am), spent approximately 15 minutes with the chief of police, and declared Zimmerman’s situation a case of self defense under SYG. The police were still investigating at that time, but with that declaration the investigations stopped.

What’s amazing about this to me is that if the ADA had waited till his normal time to do this then Zimmerman still might have gotten the SYG declaration, but enough other stuff would have been done (to include using the cell phone to identify Martin) that much of the reason for the furor would have declined. Wouldn’t have made it right, mind, but would have made it a lot less ugly.

Brought forth by Zimmerman’s father, the retired judge? I’ve heard accusations, but nothing definitive.
