I seen the movie and read the book; the two cops were, as you pointed out, combat veterans, and yet a couple of small-time hoods got the drop on them, with Officer Campbell ending up dead.

As an aside, for me public speaking is never a problem. I once did a speech on English language instruction in front of a group of 1,800 TEFL teachers in Prague, and it didn’t faze me in the slightest. I’m comfortable with public speaking.

In a gunfight, with bullets whizzing to-and-fro, not so much.

I’m nervous as hell heh hence why I used it. I remember one time my leg was actually shaking. I’ve gotten better with it though but yeah you just never know what you’re going to be faced with in a situation like that. Campbell and Hettinger were both combat vets and trained cops to boot yet Jimmy Smith and Greg Powell who were essentially petty crooks got the jump on them. It’s as I said easy to say what you’re going to do in your head beforehand but then the actual event happens. Hell cops mess up sometimes in those situations. Why should I think that some schmo with a gun isn’t.
