Dogs latch onto big chunks of our souls in ways that only dogs can. Then they go and that tears it bleeding out of you, and you find yourself wondering sometimes whether you might have been better off if you’d never gotten a dog in the first place. My one sister has been unable to bring herself to get another dog after her first dog died.
