The facts have to somehow be allowed to stand on their own.

By attacking the investigation, by shooting the messenger, the GOP is in effect practicing the “moral relativism” they so claim to hate. Their argument basically is, “Never mind our crime, if there was one, because the investigators, even if they’re Republicans, are compromised, not perfect, etc, so no facts you uncover matter.”

Actually, by attacking the investigation and the investigators (remember they want a list of names of everyone involved in the investigation) they’re basically saying that their crimes shouldn’t be uncovered. Or that the process for determining if there were crimes shouldn’t even be allowed to play out.
