What is the legal limit of what you may have in your home for protection? I have heard shotguns are still allowed but the source was an advocacy site.

All I know is that you have to apply for a license to the police and satisfy them that you need it and have safe storage in place among other things. I think they are supposed to check you out pretty thoroughly before letting you have one in your house. Probably more info in the Wiki page under the ‘Licensing’ section.
