I remember how abrupt our arrival at the summit of Longs Peak was. It was literally like getting out of a swimming pool to gain the summit. There were already probably 50 people on the summit, and my BIL and I just came out of nowhere on the east side of the summit block all decked out in climbing gear. It was a heady experience.

That’s very cool. It was 1994 for me and I was in the best shape of my life. I was riding anywhere from 40-60 miles a day. My aunt and uncle built a cabin right below where the conventional trail begins, so we just jumped out of bed when visiting them. The big thing was getting through the keyhole and suddenly feeling gusts of wind and looking down at the valley below. The summit was pretty cool. These was no need for any special tools.
