The Republican nomination almost always goes to the guy who is considered “next in line.” Not always, 2000 and 2016 were exceptions. But Reagan won in 80 after losing the nomination in ‘76. Then it was GHWB in ‘88 (lost nomination in ‘80, was VP pick). In ‘96 it was Dole by default (Senate Majority leader, former VP nominee). ‘08 was McCain’s turn (lost nomination in 2000), ‘12 was Romney’s turn (lost nomination in ‘08).
