OK, we know Fury is a badass, and we know Captain Marvel is a badass, but the Avengers have never heard of her, Kree, or Skrulls. In the movie, Danvers and Fury are taking a road trip and she finds out his full name. She asks what other people call him, he says everyone calls him Fury. She keeps going “Your brother?” “Fury” “Your mom?” “Fury” etc.

When she arrives, she asks “Where’s Fury?”, I would have had her ask “Where’s Nick”, and then they react with a slightly humorous beat. I’d have reactions be like “I’m Captain AMERICA, and I won’t even call him that?!”
