Why do they even want MLK to have been GOP? Their movement hates any version of social change since the 1950’s, glorifies the secessionist side of the Civil War, etc.

MLK (black people generally) had reasons to be quite fond of President Eisenhower; some of that affection spilled over onto Nixon in 1960. Plus, when all those kids got arrested in Alabama on some march and the bail was set ridiculously high… Nelson Rockefeller gave the NAACP a duffel bag full of cash to get them out. (literally. He walked over to the bank with a NYC NAACP guy, started pulling money out of his safe deposit box, asked “will this be enough?” and handed it over.)

It was the Goldwater nomination that soured them on Republicans; Nixon’s southern strategy made it permanent.
