Just keep it straightforward and simple:

So there were these white guys who were too lazy to do the really hard work of running tobacco and cotton plantations in the south.

They were also too cheap to pay other people to do the work.

They tried forcing Native Americans to do the work, but those workers kept running off into the wilderness.

Then they hit on the idea of bringing people from a different continent to who were less likely to run off because they were unfamiliar with the territory to do their work.

That they were too lazy to do and too cheap to pay for

That’s not the whole story… there were also sugar plantations in the colonies. And it’s not like slavery was a brand new concept in Europe, it had existed almost continuously to some degree since the Roman Empire
