I think they were honestly just confused. They definitely weren’t aware of how diverse Latin and South America really are. And to be honest, I myself was not aware of this until I took a class on the region. I mean I knew everyone was not of Spanish or indigenous decent but at the same time, I was very surprised for example to learn about Fujomori rom my SiL. For those of who don’t know, Albert Fujomori was a child of Japanese immigrants to Peru who ended up becoming president in the 90’s I believe.
Some parts of South America are almost as diverse as the USA. And Cubans and Brasilians are quite mixed from being former slave nations.
