re: #102 Simply Sarah

Warning: Random rambling ahead

As we approach the Easter holiday this, at least for most Christians, Sunday I cannot help but ponder the meaning of the fact that a relatively minor Christian holiday, Christmas, seems to have become in many minds the most important Christian holiday largely due to how secularized it has become.

Contrast this with Easter, which is, without question, by far the most important Christian holiday for all major branches of Christianity, yet it often seems discounted by many Christians as little more than one of the few days a year they may go to church. It is also secularized to a degree, but not nearly to the level of Christmas and it certainly doesn’t have the same cultural meaning.

It just all seems somewhat odd to me, even if I can mostly understand why it is the case.

Try eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox or Coptic Easter. It’s a much bigger deal than Christmas and the services can be pretty spectacular. I think cristmas became a bigger deal in the West because the Catholics were coopting a pagan holiday to spread the religion throughout Europe.
