I should note that most of the hotels I stayed at in Japan were not family hotels.

Business hotels are not exactly known for their space.

But they are reasonably priced! Our trip to Japan was under $100 per person per night. Scored a really nice business hotel in Hakodate for $35 per person per night, and a new one in Sendai that must have been cheaper because nobody knew about it yet.

That one was awesome. Shower/bathing area enclosed separately, Japanese style, big tub, the washing area, fill the tub while you clean yourself up and then soak in the nice hot water.
