$250K is a lot of money regardless of where you live. There are plenty of people living in New York and LA who make far less than that.

Where I live it is just enough to pay your own bills and not be blown away when you have to find $1K for medical bills insurance doesn’t pay. JUST ENOUGH.

As it is there are two income college educated families I know who qualify for government assistance (food—baby formula).

The housing market is the big reason, IMHO. Property taxes can easily be $1k a month in many suburbs.

It is VERY EXPENSIVE to live in a major metropolitan area. I know people who are spending nearly $1K (2 cars) a month just to get to work and back.
