I think they bank on the fact that the damage is done with the message, whether it’s true or not. With scant attention spans most people will not be aware of the debunking, so the original message remains in the general consciousness.
I don’t think this is accidental or even sloppiness. I think it’s deliberate and as such is the lowest form of ‘bearing false witness’…..
