Yes, it meant exactly the same thing then that it does now. In the novel, instead of a stunt pilot, Ms. Galore was the leader of an all-woman gang, the Concrete Mixers, from Chicago, which specialized in smuggling (good place for it, what with Lake Michigan right in front). While it was never stated, the implication was that 007 already knew of her (probably due to her smuggling activities, which by going through Canada would have attracted the attention of the SIS), and that “Pussy Galore” was an alias. If so, her real name remains unknown.

/Given the choice between the movies and the books, I defer to the books on most subjects re 007.
