I believe the stomper says he asked the police to stop her and they said that wasn’t their job. The implication being they were there to prevent anyone being hurt, not annoyed.

That seems odd. Why would cops just say “aw, fuck it” when a potentially hostile person rushes at a candidate? Doesn’t make sense.
