They’re trying to get sympathy from the other Arab states and turn this not into a Syria vs. rebels but Muslims vs. Israel thing. This is the danger of Israel’s strikes, of making the rebels seem aligned with Israel, and making other Muslim states lower their opposition to Assad. I don’t think it’ll work— just as the Muslim states by and large didn’t fall for Saddam’s attack on Israel as broadening the conflict— but it’s a risk.
Agreed, but I must also point out that sometimes risks simply have to be run. Israel determined that Hezbollah having a ready supply of Fatah-110s was an intolerable security threat. Given that level of threat, Israel often needs to undertake unilateral action.
