So the phone interview is done. It was less of an interview and more of an informal chat, which was nice. The GM up in Seattle told me that the reviews I got from the folks here in Austin were glowing. They really liked me, thought I did a fantastic job on their tests, and they felt strongly that I was one of, if not the strongest candidate for the job.

He basically just wanted to be sure about my level of interest because he was worried that I’m overqualified for the part and that I’d lose interest and run in a month and force them back into a hiring pattern when they need someone yesterday for the job. I told him that while I might be overqualified for a straight up marketing research role, I don’t know anything about their specific field, so the job would be a great opportunity to grow and learn, both in that field and in general. Also, down the line there could be room for growth or for the role to expand even if the short term was eyeball-sporking levels of tedium and staring at Excel, and I’m interested to see where things will go. I must have said the right thing, because he agreed with me and even talked about some of the ways that the position could evolve.

He still has some other people to talk to, but I’ll know early-to-mid week next week if I’m moving ahead. I’m feeling really confident now, but it’s not in stone until the offer comes in.
