From what I’ve seen Great Powers are almost alway destroyed by their hubris. They get to the top, come to the conclusion their position is the natural order of things and they stop trying. I think it happened quicker to the States because of the strong streak of Calvinism in them that fed the hubris.

And after a bit of thought I think the US started having problems when the Soviet Union fell apart. Because America very often does not define itself by what it is, but by what it is not. Without something to be against America lost its way.
