His outright lies and falsifications aside, he makes a lot of totally subjective and unsubstantiated statements that the media are happy to repeat and discuss as if they had any objective merit.

The media is still playing by old rules, for the most part. It is slowly getting better because various outlets do seem more willing to just say that the president is lying about stuff. But there are more than enough players still willing to play the “it’s just spin and so let’s unpack it” game.
