I recall my grandparents knew a conservative couple who was doctrinaire conservative on every issue. But they were fine with government funding for mental illness because their daughter had one. See, that’s the thing. A lot of conservatives are like that when it comes to something that hits close to home to them. Take the Reagans embracing gun control after President Reagan was shot, take Dick Cheney’s support for same sex marriage having a lesbian daughter, and there are more examples too. I don’t expect conservatives to see everyone’s children as their children but I do want them to realize that most people dream the same dreams for their children.

uh… Reagan embraced gun control long before he got shot, because the Black Panthers used to do open-carry patrols in Oakland (see Mulford Act, 1968).

If you want a Reagan example — Nancy’s embrace of stem-cell research when she realized it could lead to treatment (possibly even a cure) for Alzheimer’s.
