As another fellow Southerner, I agree.

What has given us the Lost Causers and such is the same thing that gave us the Weimar Republic being subverted and subsumed by the Nazis and throwing the world into war again: the defeated and their ideologies were never truly defeated and, in fact, were allowed to fester for years unchecked by the powers that be.

Reconstruction should have been carried out as de-Nazification was, but political sabotage in Washington from the reemerging South scuttled it before it had a chance to effect lasting change.
