Term limits were Hatch’s big issue in his first Senate run.
Incumbent Frank Moss had served 3 terms.
“What do you call a Senator who’s served in office for 18 years? You call him home,” candidate Hatch said.
This was in 1976. Hatch won and he has been there ever since.

That was also part of the Gingrich Contract on America — and it succeeded. Of course no one, except Joe Scarborough, took it seriously. However, there are a lot of people of all political persuasions who believe this is a great idea. I am not enthusiastic, especially for legislators (it’s essential for President and ok for Governors) since it would leave this country under the control of un-elected staff.
