Yup, I agree about the design. And I suspect - for hard foreign currency, the East Germans made them fairly well.

Making them fairly well would probably have constituted a challenge, even with hard currency coming, the GDR didn’t have the raw material resources or the manufacturing capabilities to make anything in a consistent quality for long.
