Any particular reason for the demise? I remember when the USA had cornerstone companies like IBM, Xerox, 3M, Dennison, etc. IBM was a big part of the New York state economy. The demise started in the late 1970s thereabout.

Labor costs…. Mexico thought they could compete, they couldn’t….. no shops left in Mexico and they were paying their people $1.00 an hour.
