Good Lord, that’s deranged.

My wife claims the GOP has moved away from her (she was originally a Reagan supporter before becoming a Libertarian, then a Democrat - funny the older she gets the more liberal she gets).

I point out that the GOP has always been like this. Nixon’s Southern Strategy, Reagan kicking off his campaign on the site of slain civil rights leaders and inviting wingnut evangelicals into party positions, people like Grover Norquist and Frank Luntz, &c.

The party hasn’t moved rightward leaving the moderates behind. The party went rightward in Goldwater’s day, Buckley Jr.’s day, or even in McCarthy’s day. There has never been a time in either of our lives that the GOP was not moving further right.

It fascistic tendencies now are the logical outcome of decades of strategy by the party itself. What happened is some people (like her) did not want to be dragged along with the natural movement of the party. That is not the same thing as the “party leaving her.”
