There’s a stretch of road about 4 miles long not far from me. No traffic lights and the limit is 40. Drivers routinely go 60-70 along there. Police have stepped up patrols in the past year or so but the fast driving continues.

But the big reason is that people are often stupid behind the wheel. I believe you should have to retake a road test every 10 years after you get licensed.

The vast majority of drivers believe their driving skills are above average.

The thing is, even though modern cars are vastly safer than they were even a decade ago, they don’t escape the laws of physics.
