This has probably been posted before, but I just saw it for the first time, and it’s outstanding analysis by Carlin:

The idea that comedy is about punching up might be Liberal propaganda.
Comedy is a different thing to different people. It can simply be stooges hurting themselves, and to assholes, it’s piling on the most vulnerable people and being part of the jeering mob.
