I think memory tends to fail, conflate, and invent a lot. That he’d somehow have this very clear memory of a brief encounter back when he was in sixth grade— with a guy he’s lost touch with, so isn’t reminded of often; I can’t think of any memories from that time period I could say with certainty what someone said or that my interpretation of it at the time was correct.

Because you (and I) know that even if we think we remember, it doesn’t necessarily mean we do remember and not just imagine/conflate/falsely conjure (although I am sure I remember a couple of moments from kindergarten… ;). Riehl is too dumb for such introspection.
