“…certain perversities became apparent as I settled into the job. It sometimes required me to reason backward, from desired conclusion to suitable premise.”

This all you need to know right there. It’s just like the creationists, the anti-vaxxers, inpeechers, and even all these weird GOP state platforms. The conclusion comes first, then the premise. That’s why they all look so crazy to logical people. The amount of effort to squeeze a fucked up premise into an already decided conclusion requires a certain mindset. And logic isn’t really involved.
