I think the point is that the typical “liberal” really never came out and fought in any organized manner. On the other hand the more activist types on that end of the spectrum started calling themselves progressive.

As with all political labels it is amusing, since T.R. (hardly a liberal in the modern sense) was the epitome of a progressive, back when the word meant something.

I wonder if Glenn Beck has discovered Teddy R. as a bte noire yet.
