Speaking of tipsy, I’m giving this Chinese whisky a try. I saw it in the supermarket today next to Ballantine’s. Ballantine’s was priced at 298 yuan for 500 ml ($44) while this one retails for almost a tenth of that. Surprisingly, it is actually not bad. 40% alcohol by volume, and it is bottled in Qingdao, which is famous for the Tsingtao brewery. I am drinking it neat, and not getting any bad aftertaste or throat burn.

The English brand name is a clumsy play on the Chinese brand name “zhen ai” = distinguished affection or “be inclined to be distinguished.”

Everything alcoholic I drank in China in 2008 burned my throat. Everything.
