I edged closer to simply unfriending a fraternity brother on FaceBook for lamenting the back-to-back court decisions in how the DOMA decision hurt Americans and was judicial overreach without really remarking on the VRA effects. Though the Looking Glass style of remarks.

I have been tolerating him primarily as a way to keep tabs on “other side” viewpoints. But his born-again homophobia is getting pretty outrageous. And it’s like I am reading remarks from a totally different person than the one I knew thirty years ago.

Unfriend him. I’ve mentioned before about dumping one of my GF’s college friends after watching him go full metal wingnut. This guy posted a cartoon of Obama which claimed he was knowingly working with Al Queda. Literally had a Glenn Beck mindset.

As for people changing: it happens. There’s a guy I’ve known since 7th grade, who I was good friends with for years. Best man at his wedding. Like your guy, he’s gone complete conservative, replete with racist remarks that he claims are just “politically incorrect.”

The breaking point for me was sitting around with him and some other guys at the start of the 2nd Iraq War. They switched over to the live broadcast of the Baghdad bombing on Fox, cracked some beers, and laughed their asses off. People are dying on the screen and these guys are treating it like a football game.

It really wasn’t a hard decision to make. It was also when I started to become aware that conservatives were starting to go off the deep end.
