Oh for fuck sake. It’s pretty clear that Bernie is saying that Democrats should be trying to get back the white working class vote and they should be. This isn’t Howard Dean saying he wants to be the candidate of guys with Confederate flag bumper stickers. This is Bernie Sanders saying the Democrats need to reclaim a voting bloc that once was a strong part of their base.

You’d have to be a pretty special kind of person to interpret his statement as racism. Now, you could in fact criticize him a little bit for downplaying the continuing role and impact of race in America, and its relevance to people’s voting choices as a consequence. But racism? That’s a stretch.
