I never had a real college basketball team until I went to Mason. Always liked Dean Smith though dating from a Rick Reilly article I read on him. But I can see why people would hate UNC.

I think part of it (and also my dislike for Notre Dame) is how they sucked away local talent into their program. One reason some of the regional schools remained 2nd-rate in terms of athletics. Though at this point basketball has almost reached the level of corruption enjoyed by college football. Essentially acting as a “free” minor league for the professional level.

A redeeming feature is that they have an actual championship tournament that is fun to watch as compared to the travesty that is the bowl and BCS system. (Also doesn’t help that my interactions with the college football players at university were almost universally negative while the college basketball players I met were almost universally fairly cool and not stuck-up.)
