The Lara Logan Case on the Feverswamps of the Net, and the Reality of Rape

Maybe in her own frenzy, Echidne of the Snakes, got a little hyperbolic.

Human culture is not responsible for rape. Men who rape are responsible for rape. And not all men rape. I think she was trying to say that, but in her anger (totally justified, btw) didn’t make that real clear.

Also rape is far more prevalent in countries where women have no or few rights. Yes, we have rape in the U.S., but it’s much worse in countries where women are still getting stoned for adultery. Where woman have no choices in who they marry and no way to divorce. They live in abusive situations their entire lives with no way out.

Egypt is more moderate than most of the Arab world, and who knows who these men were. Maybe some of the prisoners who were let out? But I have to tell you that Arab men treated us much differently than Jewish men in Israel, the most democratic of all the Middle East. We got groped in the Arab markets, so much so that we stopped shopping there without a male escort.

It was a wild crowd that day in Egypt, but you can’t compare these folks to Americans. If such a thing happened to a reporter here, then we can discuss that and I don’t recall that ever happening. Not to a reporter or a woman in a professional situation.
