Cheney always struck me as someone out to prove what a tough guy he was. I never really made the connection between that and his draft deferments, but it makes sense. Sort of the like the self-loathing, closeted gay who speaks out against homosexuality.

That whole generation of politicians and pundits is heavily populated with men who didn’t go to Vietnam because people of their class didn’t have to, or because they managed individually to make use of various deferments and exemptions.

This did not stop many of them from thinking war was a fine and dandy thing to run, or approve of, if not to fight.

Clinton was given extensive crap for not going to Vietnam. John Kerry was given even more extensive crap by the same people FOR going to Vietnam.

Future generations will never be able to figure any of this out.
